Mispronounce One of These 5 Words? I Think You’re More Junior Than You Think
This is a little thing that really winds me up. The mispronunciation of technical terms in a professional context.
If you mispronounce one of these 5 terms I’ll think you’re a junior.
Cache
Correctly pronounced as “kash”, this is often mispronounced as “cachet” or “catch”. Cachet is the one I hear at work, which means the state of being respected rather than a technical term for how you’ve messed up our mobile app.
When you mispronounce Cache I lose respect for you
Tech Debt
Correctly pronounced as “tek det“, in our company I keep hearing “tek debit”. It sounds like a frog attempting to communicate on our Zoom calls, to be frank.
Nothing wrong with frogs
C#
C# is correctly pronounced as “C-Sharp”. Not “C-hash” or more disastrously “C-pound”.
Hash means something else
Tuple
Tuple is “tuh-ple”. If you say “too-ple” you’re probably a “shee-ple” and an Apple user.
Right?
Gif
Look. The creator of the format says this is correctly pronounced as “jif”. Argue with them, not me.
I’m afraid they are, sadly dead. So…?
Conclusion
This is an article written in jest. Thinking about it, how do you pronounce jest?
