What 1x Software Devs Think About Hardcore Programmers
So, you think you’re a hardcore programmer. You stay late in the office and perform at an order of magnitude better and faster than anyone else. You think that you are awesome and tell everyone else so they are sure how great they are.
I know that you are that hardcore coder. Here is what your colleagues think about you each and every day.
Getting help
You appear to be so isolated because you don’t need any help. You don’t use Stack Overflow or the web. GitHub Copilot doesn’t know everything you do. You don’t even use documentation!
Why would I need help?
Paid software
You don’t pay for software! Why would you, you create software? That means you are also the go-to for the latest pirated software. This is partly because you remember Limewire and never got out of the habit of getting software completely free.
If software developers wanted to be paid, they would make everything open-sourced.
Hardware
You have multiple screens. You have those weird extra desktops Mac people seem to use (and nobody understands). Not only that, but you also have a PlayDate on your desk to show what a hardcore gamer you are. Go you!
You’ll upgrade your desktop computer with RAM and have a graphics card that exceeds your work requirements.
Of course, you always have that Dvorak keyboard in your backpack.
What is your problem with Dvorak keyboards?
O/S
If you use Windows, you hate Microsoft.
If you use OSX, you love Apple.
Actually, you use Linux though, you hardcore master.
What is your point, exactly?
Rest time
You actually dream code, imagining that you code in your sleep. Solving problems, it’s like a Tetris dream without Tetris.
Therefore you are able to have a hardcore dream.
Did you just see Tetris or something?
Your job
You are not a software developer. Certainly not a coder. You are a…
Software Engineer
Moreover, you think being an engineer will attract a partner. You will never realize how wrong you are.
Why wouldn’t people be impressed with my Software Engineering skill?
Colleagues
Your colleagues fear your coding skill. Your speed.
You never share what you are doing with your colleagues. They can work out their own magic sauce, amirite?
They should be going through the same grind all software developers need to go through.
Bosses
They dislike you but put up with you. That’s just the way it is.
But…everyone…loves…me.
Conclusion
You are hardcore. You know the score. Get it done.
