Your Tech Job Sucks. Here’s What You Should Do

You’re likely to read a large number of stories on Medium about ‘quiet quitting‘. Some are actually quiet quitting without even knowing it.

“I want to tell you the secret about this. The one thing they don’t tell you in those stories about effectively quitting your job without telling anyone.

Those people are invariably doing the right thing, but not going far enough.

They should actually be quitting their jobs.

You should too”

You Should Quit Your Job Even If You Like It

The Timing Is Perfect For A New Opportunity

When you are happy in a job you’re in the perfect mindset to find a new one.

You can turn up to interviews with a happy smiling face. You don’t need to fake it because you’re actually happy.

If you no longer want to work in a company you’re still in a great frame of mind to start your new endeavor. Make a new company? It’s easier when you’re happy, as is an educational pursuit.

“I’m only happy when I code”

You’ll Never Be Rich

Working for someone else you’ll never get to where you want to go. You’ll never be independently wealthy working in a company.

You need to get out there are be on your own. You need to quit your job.

If that doesn’t suit you maybe you’ve not looked at the market for some time. Tech bosses are terrible at underpaying current staff and overpaying for new talent that comes in. Now you’re aware of that fact you should use it to your advantage.

“Yet I earn a good salary”

You’ll Never Be Free Doing The Same All The Time. Take A Risk!

One of my colleagues at work covers their webcam in case the office sees what he’s doing all day.

“He’s not stable”

If you’re chained to the machine in this way you might ask yourself whether your paycheck is worth it. When you make that analysis you might also make the decision that there is never a better time to make a change than now.

When you start a new job you are in a great position to negotiate and agree with a new employer on what work might look like. If you’re looking for a better working environment you might look at other careers and see what suits you.

“If you don’t take a risk you deserve the 9–5 grind of your current position”

You Should Quit Your Job If You Hate It

Seems obvious that you shouldn’t continue to be somewhere you dislike.

“I’m holding on for the money”

Although The Secret Developer is currently in a position they hate and is staying for the big $ there are some other reasons to not quit your job even if you detest it.

Here are some:

  • Family

  • Your cat has cancer

  • Your parents might think ill of you

In most situations you don’t have a good answer to this question: Why are you doing something you hate? If you aren’t willing to accept the answer you need to quit.

You Only Have One Life

If you don’t do it now when? Are you waiting for the best years of your life to be over before you make a change?

It’s not a good strategy. Try to be the best version of yourself you can be.

“I am. By doing LeetCode”

Conclusion

This article is about why you should quit your job, whether you are happy with it or not.

Should everyone quit their job? Certainly not. You might have reasons to stay on in a job you dislike.

How do you know if you should quit your job or not?

“Perhaps look at your situation and think about it rationally?

Not for too long, as you’re not getting any younger”
